Lakeside is a popular summertime and retirement destination located along
Tenmile Lakes about 10 miles north of Coos Bay/North Bend on the Southern
Oregon Coast.
Tenmile Lakes is one of Oregon’s largest and most popular recreation lakes.
The lake is well known for its prize large mouth bass, as well as trout,
crappie, bluegill and catfish. Tenmile Creek feeds into the ocean, providing
great steelhead fishing in the Spring and Fall. Lakeside is also a popular
spot for waterskiers and watercraft sports.
The town’s main event is the 4th of July celebration, with fireworks over
the lake. Coos Bay Yacht Club members race sailboats on summer weekends.
Lakeside’s history is bound to Ten Mile Lakes. The two lakes served as the
means of trade and communications, making the development of farms and homes
possible. The Tenmile Lakes name came from a Native American nicknamed “Ten
Mile Tom”, who built the first permanent cabin in Lakeside in 1850. His name
and the lake's name came from the habit of replying when people asked how
far Lakeside was from other places, “Oh, about Ten Miles.”
The Sand Dunes and Oregon Coast are only minutes from downtown Lakeside.
Strategically located between Coos Bay/North Bend and Winchester
Bay/Reedsport, clamming, crabbing and ocean fishing is easily accessible
from Lakeside.
