Reedsport and Winchester Bay are known as “the Heart of the Oregon Dunes”.

The Oregon Dunes National recreation area is a 47-mile stretch of sand dunes that run from Florence to North Bend. There are three beautiful and scenic rivers in the area and over 17 fresh water lakes within a 20-mile radius.

Some of the best fishing opportunities on the Oregon Coast are here. The ocean and rivers offer a variety of seafood such as Chinook and Coho salmon, bottom fish, striped and small mouth bass, steelhead, sturgeon, shad, pink fin perch, Dungeness crab, clams and oysters.

ATV enthusiasts enjoy riding the highest and most challenging dunes on the coast. Other outdoor recreational opportunities include body surfing at the beach, scuba diving, hiking through miles of tall timber, skateboarding at a world class skateboard park, golfing, biking, boating, fishing and kayaking.

There is a 1,000 acre preserve located 3 miles east of Reedsport on Highway

38 that provides an opportunity to view hundreds of Roosevelt Elk in their natural habitat. The Lower Umpqua Area is a bird watcher’s paradise. The forest and marshes provide an excellent habitat for bald eagle, osprey, snowy plover, great blue heron and great egret.

Whale watching is popular at the Umpqua River Lighthouse, the only working lighthouse on the West coast featuring a red lens. There is a whale-watching platform located across from the Lighthouse. Grey Whales travel up and down the Oregon coast twice a year. Watch for the telltale geysers of water indicating the presence of the majestic whales traveling south to their breeding grounds during the winter migration from late December through early January. In the Spring, they return north with their calves to the feeding grounds in Alaska.

You can learn about interesting things to do and see at the Visitor Center at the junction of Highways 101 & 38. Information about the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, hiking areas and access permits are available from U.S. Forest Service personnel at the Visitor Center.
