We have put together a list of some of the top things to see, do and eat:
Head to the Beach
Gearhart’s unspoiled and expansive beaches are perfect for beach combing, exploring grassy dunes and river estuaries, and late afternoon barefoot strolls watching the sunset over the glimmering Pacific Ocean.
Hit the Links
Enjoy hitting a bucket of balls or a round of golf at Gearhart Golf Links, the oldest course in Oregon. This course first opened in 1892 with just three holes, and now boasts a stunning 18-hole public course.
Explore Peter Iredale Shipwreck
Head to Fort Stevens State Park where you can explore the rusted remains of a steel cargo ship that ran aground on Clatsop beach in 1906. Low tide is the best time to wander amongst the wreckage. Discover more history at Battery Russell –once used to defend the Oregon coast from Japanese attacks during WWII. We recommend picking up a brochure in the parking lot. Fun note – you can drive on the beach at Fort Stevens!
Spot Elk and Whales
Keep your eyes open for a sighting of the local herd of coastal elk that call the beaches and dunes of Gearhart home. You may also spot a whale spout from the shore as majestic gray whales cruise by the coastal shores as they begin their migration north or south depending on the time of the year.
Dig for Clams
Enjoy a popular Gearhart recreational pastime. Make your way to the beach, and with a little luck and determination, your efforts may be rewarded with some tasty razor clams to cook up back at your cozy Oregon Beach Vacations rental. Check out some helpful tips and guidelines here.
Local Brews and Bites
Stop by the legendary McMenamins Sand Trap Bar & Grill any time of day for a delicious meal. This Northwest-style pub is known for their locally-made microbrews and hearty pub fare made with fresh and local ingredients. They also have seasonal specials and a kid’s menu. Outside dining is available on the patio, where pups are welcome, too!
Go Fishing
Astoria, Hammond, and Warrenton have several charter boats available to take you on a fishing excursion for salmon, sturgeon, and bottom fish. The experienced charter captain and crew can take care of everything, including fishing licenses.
Hit the Shops
Gearhart has several specialty shops where you can find the perfect gift for that someone special, or a souvenir to remember your Gearhart getaway. Be sure to stop by Pacific Crest Cottage for a lovely selection of antique linens, cozy quilts, soaps and lotions, and vintage furniture. If you love treasure hunting through antiques, be sure to check out one of the antique stores on Pacific Way in the heart of Gearhart.
