Located on a 49-acre site in Newport, Oregon and adjacent to Yaquina Bay of the Pacific Ocean, the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) is an accredited research and education center operated by Oregon State University together with five state and federal agencies. Honoring former U.S Senator from Oregon Mark Hatfield, HMSC offers unparalleled scientific exploration opportunities for all ages!
HMSC’s research ranges from the shoreline to the depths of the ocean, focusing on questions that affect both human and natural resources. Some of its activities include studying Oregon’s estuaries, intertidal zones and coastal currents; tracking marine mammals; monitoring harmful algal blooms in nearshore waters; assessing fish populations; exploring deep-sea volcanoes; and documenting ocean productivity.
There are several ways to learn more about HMSC and explore the marine environment it inhabits. The Visitor Center offers exhibits, touch tanks with live sea creatures, and educational programs for people of all ages. A variety of guided field trips and workshops can be scheduled with experienced naturalists, providing a firsthand look at the amazing creatures and habitats of Yaquina Bay.
Outdoor lovers can enjoy the nature trails around HMSC, which feature interpretive signs describing the marine life and habitats along the Oregon coast. The center also provides educational programs for school groups, workshops and internships for college students, web-based learning for educators and an array of volunteer opportunities.
HMSC is a vital part of the Newport community, providing research and education to everyone from elementary school students to professional scientists. Its mission is to be a leader in teaching, learning and stewardship of marine resources, while also advancing science-based solutions to coastal issues faced by Oregon and the world. The center’s unique location and wide range of activities make it an essential part of the OSU experience. With its dedication to research, education and stewardship, HMSC is a one-of-a-kind destination for discovering the mysteries of the sea!

Reviews Oregon State University’s Marine Science Center
“Great little ocean science center. Plenty of hands on exhibits and full of information. Kids had a great time. Fantastic value for a $5 donation. Advance reservations are now required though so be ready.”

“We had SO much fun! I planned a low-cost beach trip for my friend and I and this was easily one of our favorite activities. The museum is free, but donations are appreciated and available by cash and card near the entrance.
The museum is small, but packed with cool stuff. There is a touch tide pool, wave simulations, and a new baby octopus! I spent an extensive amount of time playing in the touch tide pool. And the photo opportunities were unreal! I’ll be back soon, and if you go to see Newport, you have to stop here.”
