Oregon’s “Bay Area” is an all season destination, with a variety of fun things to do. From world class sporting opportunities to whale watching, shopping, casino gambling, entertainment and sightseeing, there’s something for everyone in Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston.
For the sports/outdoor enthusiast, there are numerous choices on land and water. The Oregon National Dunes Recreation Area has sand dunes that reach up to 500 feet above sea level. Visitors to the dunes enjoy hiking, horseback riding, sand boarding, off highway vehicle use, dune buggy tours and riding ATV’s. Other activities include birding, tide pooling, beach combing, hunting, archery, bowling, tennis, golfing and bicycling. Poplar water activities are: sailing, canoeing, kayaking, water-skiing, swimming, scuba diving and fishing.
Crabbing and clamming are allowed year-round in bays, estuaries, beaches, tide pools, piers and jetties. Check Oregon’s Fishing Regulations for current limits and license requirements. If you don’t want to catch your own, check out Fisherman’s Wharf in Charleston. You can pick out a Dungeness Crab from their live tank and they will cook and clean your catch.
Storm and whale watching is popular along the Southwestern Oregon coast.
Shore Acres State Park, Bastendorff Beach County Park, Cape Arago State Park and Simpson’s Reef Overlook offer outstanding views of waves and whales.
From November through May, you can view the migration of gray whales form the Arctic Sea to Baja California and back.
